Veterans Reign in Their Own Parade is the result of a proud collaboration of Rainelle Elementary School students, teachers and well known Headline Books children’s book authors, Martin and Delia Wach. This is a story of patriotism, compassion and how Rainelle, WV opened their homes and hearts to give these veterans the homecoming so many of them never had.
During a Headline Kids School Show visit to Rainelle Elementary in May, 2006, the Wachs happened to be there the day Run for Wall, Rolling Thunder, and Task Force Omega rode into town to commemorate the POW/MIA of foreign wars. The Wachs were witness to the family atmosphere and warm welcome the students and towns people gave to the bikers that came from all over the U.S.A. to Rainelle, WV.
During lunch at the school with the students and bikers, the Wachs were told of the history of this momentous event that occurs every year in Rainelle. This year will be the nineteenth year for the event. The bikers have embraced and adopted the school, donating funds for a new playground and making life long friends. The veterans bring their war experiences and life stories into this small town and the support for them is overwhelming.
This chance meeting and ongoing collaboration has been a wealth of experience and satisfaction for everyone involved. With the Wachs guidance and instruction, the students have written and illustrated a book about what these bikers and their cause mean to them personally.
Published by Headline Books, a West Virginia company, this will be the first “School Book” collaboration between Martin and Delia Wach and an elementary school. The Wachs have visited over 300 schools nationwide and currently have four children’s books published. They are in the top 2% of best selling children’s book authors in America.
Veterans Reign in Their Own Parade will be released Memorial Day weekend, 2007, in Rainelle, WV. The Wachs and the students will be on hand to sign books on Memorial Day weekend.
