Martin and Delia Wach are in the top 2% of bestselling children’s book authors with their Teddy Bear Guardians of the Rain Forest books and are a favorite with the grade school set. They will be visiting Louisville schools this week and make a return engagement the end of March. Their new book introduces how to write and illustrate books from brainstorming story ideas to how to draw your own illustrations. It is geared towards children but is an excellent syllabus for adults. An Adventure in Writing has a story within called ‘A Very Small Ant Adventure’ to illustrate the writing and drawing techniques explained step by step in the book. The tiny ant toy and the teddy bear who receives it once again bring the culture of the South American rain forest to students through Delia’s beautiful illustrations.
As part of the Headline Kids School Show Program, Martin and Delia Wach have visited over 300 schools nationwide bringing the rich culture of the South American rain forests to students from coast to coast. They have visited Kanawha and Cabell County schools several times over the last 12 months. Their third book, The Great West Virginia Snow Adventure, released at Book Expo America in Washington, DC this past May, is now being translated into three foreign languages by school children as class projects.
In the early 90’s, a business trip took Martin to Suriname, South America and his projects there included the search for new medicines, aviculture, butterfly farming, poison dart frog research, and eco-tourism. He was introduced to the Maroon Medicine Man and lived with the Maroon Indians off and on for six years. The Indians were marooned in Suriname over 300 years ago by their Dutch masters. Since the day they landed, the Maroons have fought for their freedom and have been nearly the sole protectors of our rain forests. It is only because the Maroons have been so feared that the Rain Forest still remains.
Delia Wach is a highly acclaimed water color and mixed media artist who has fallen in love with painting Teddy Bears and their friends. She has created art work not only for individuals and Teddy Bear Manufacturers, she has been nominated for two Golden Teddy awards. Delia was recently been commissioned by the National Park Trust to do a painting of Senator John McCain and presented it to him this past June at their Centennial Celebration of the American Antiquities Act of 1906 Awards luncheon.
The Wachs are sought after and very popular speakers and are dedicated to visiting school children to share their unique experiences and talents. They have inspired many to attain goals of environmental protection, careers in art and writing, and social consciousness. Their school program enhances the classroom and opens young minds to many possibilities and potential careers.
