In all of these classes we will be: Sharing how we develop our characters, Drawing the characters, and adding appeal to the characters. We will use simple materials available to everyone including drawing paper, crayons, children’s water colors, tracing paper, and pens.
All of Delia’s and Martin’s classes will be a journey from a blank piece of paper to a finished story or report with writing, creative lettering and illustrations.
One page story or report with illustrations:
Step 1: Brainstorming page to begin the creative process
Step 2: Outlining of the story or report
Step 3: Mock up page with sketches
Step 4: Write story.
Step 5: Edit story
Step 6: Do illustrations
Step 7: Put page together.
Step 8: Present and share.
Classes will include the following selections.
1. What’s in your name? Students will begin an exploration into creating a story using the letters of their name. The authors will cover the process of writing and illustrating a finished work.2. Drawing a Fantasy Anaconda: This class begins with a composition system and then drawing simple shapes. This drawing is done entirely in crayon. The students draw an anaconda with the environment of plants, small creatures, and water. The authors will also share the writing techniques used in creating their Anaconda poster. A DVD is also available for this class.
3. Drawing and Painting Macaws: The illustrator, Delia Wach, demonstrates how she draws Rain Forest Macaws. The illustrator will teach basic composition, the use of tracing paper, transferring images to water color paper and creating a finished image using just a box of crayons. The authors will also discuss how they weaved a story about raising Macaws around these illustrations. The drawing program is also available on DVD.
4. Heynes reaching for a butterfly: The authors again share how they develop their characters, draw their characters and add appeal to the characters. They also explain the writing process used to turn a real medicine man into a teddy bear reaching for a butterfly. They again use simple drawing materials, crayons, children’s water colors, pen and paper. This is also available on DVD.
5. How to draw a West Virginia Snowman: The illustrator, Delia Wach, shares her techniques for creating a character out of her imagination from the book “The great West Virginia Snow Adventure” when no reference material is available. She teaches the students to create structure underneath with a preliminary sketch. She demonstrates how she uses light and shadow and then colors and finishes the drawing. The authors also talk about how they created the ideas for writing this book. This is also available on DVD.
6. Drawing Juba as a Butterfly: The illustrator Delia Wach share her techniques for creating this character from the book “Butterfly Dreams”, and adds the cuteness factor using simple materials such as a box of crayons, children’s water colors, pens, and paper. The authors then discuss the approach they used in creating this book about a Teddy Bear that falls asleep and dreams she is a butterfly. Then she learns how to build a butterfly garden.
